Makerspace Intern
The White River Valley Middle School is one of the hubs of our community. We serve students in grades 6-8 from Royalton and Bethel, VT. We also have students from neighboring towns like Rochester and Stockbridge who choose to
attend our school. We are a center for academics, extracurricular, and integrated services to support our students and families. We host Town Meeting, partner with town committees, and are at the table for many discussions beyond education and our four walls. We would like an intern to help us grow our Maker Space.
Intern Responsibilities
- Access Burlington’s Generator Maker Space training to learn to use the tools and equipment in our Maker Space.
- Visit Maker Spaces around Vermont to learn about community engagement and skills delivery models currently in use, documenting learning to be shared with school staff.
- Consult with our Art and Tech Ed teachers to help them envision ways to use the Maker Space to enhance their curriculum.
- Create "How to Guides" for our equipment including 3D printers, Laser Engraver, Sewing Machines, and Vinyl cutter & press based on models from other maker spaces.
- Develop and teach Maker Space trainings for teachers, parents, and children K-12 based on workshop models gleaned from Generator.
- Manage Maker Space open studio hours for community members.
- Create signage for trails on our campus, the Tunbridge Forest & the Bethel Library.
What the intern could learn
- Gain knowledge of the resources and capacities of maker spaces around Vermont
- Develop relationships and partnerships with maker space staff around Vermont
- Build skills around the use of all the tools in our Maker Space
- Create "How to Guides" and test them in real-time
- Learn what elementary, middle, and high school students can accomplish using a maker space
- Practice training people of all ages to use tools in the context of community studio hours
- Use maker space tools to create lasting signage in partnership with community organizations
Preferred Skills/Interests/Experience
- Expertise with at least some Maker Space tools
- Facility with CNC operating systems (ie Cuttle)
- Interest in learning how the maker space model builds community
- Patience and ability to teach others
This position is part of a cohort of 12 interns working with organizations that support the White River Valley Community Schools. Funded by the UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, free housing for interns will be provided at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, VT. Interns will participate in a week-long community orientation, weekly intern cohort workshops for professional development, networking, and reflection and a final sharing event on Monday, August 4, 5:30-7 pm.
